Transfer Credit

Texas A&M University-Victoria is committed to helping you transfer your previously earned college credits smoothly so you can stay on track to earn your degree. Whether you’re coming from a Texas community college, another university, the military, or you’ve earned credit through exams, this page explains how A&M-Victoria evaluates and applies transfer credit.

Accreditation of Sending Institutions

To transfer credit to A&M-Victoria, coursework must come from institutions recognized by one of the following:

  • The U.S. Department of Education
  • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB)
  • An accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)

Generally, college-level academic courses that are not remedial or a first-year seminar type course will transfer. Coursework from schools with only programmatic accreditation are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

How Transfer Credit is Evaluated

Course Compatibility

Transfer course equivalencies are verified by subject matter experts and reviewed by academic colleges as needed to determine whether transfer coursework is equivalent to courses offered at A&M-Victoria.

Degree Applicability

Accepted transfer credits must fulfill degree requirements, either as major courses or electives. Your academic advisor and your program’s department will guide you in applying these credits toward your degree.

Transfer Credit Policies

  • Transfer courses keep the same level as originally earned.
  • Grades earned at other institutions are not lowered when transferred.
  • Quarter hours are converted to semester hours.
  • When a course is repeated, the last grade and credit attempt are used for transfer evaluation.
  • If you have completed the Texas Core Curriculum at another Texas public institution, your core requirements will be considered complete at A&M-Victoria.
  • If you have not completed the full core, individual courses may transfer as electives or fulfill degree requirements with approval.
  • A maximum of 12 semester credit hours in religion may count toward your degree.

Types of Transfer Credit

Traditional College Coursework

Credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities are the most common types of transfer credit.

Credit by Examination

A&M-Victoria accepts credit for exams including:

Students must meet minimum score requirements as listed in the A&M-Victoria academic catalog. Credits earned by exam carry a grade of CR (credit), do not affect GPA, and do not count toward graduation honors.

Military Credit

Undergraduate credit may be awarded for military training and experience evaluated at the college level. Credit evaluations are based on the American Council on Education (ACE) guidelines.

Veterans may also be eligible for additional credit under Texas House Bill 269, which awards credit for military service itself, including required physical education courses and up to 12 elective hours. Eligibility requirements apply; speak with your advisor or contact the Student Records Office for details.
