UHV athletes fare well in city championship

Three University of Houston-Victoria athletes finished in the top three in their respective divisions at the 4th annual Victoria City Championship golf tournament this past weekend.

Whitley Patterson (Glen Rose), a junior transfer and first signee to the UHV women�s golf program, won the women�s division posting a three-day 235. Patterson, who attended McLennan College, carded rounds of 70-81-84 on the three local courses and breezed to a 23-shot victory.

 Austin Griffin, a junior from Cuero and a member of the UHV men�s golf team finished as runner-up in the men�s championship division after losing a one-hole playoff to three-time champion Mark Bazan. Griffin, who started the day seven shots back of Bazan, fired back in the final round at Colony Creek Country Club with a 4-under 67 to finish in a tie with the defending champion.

Bazan proved why he was the defending champion as he birdied the first hole, while Griffin came away with a par. Griffin posted rounds of 78-74-67 to finish at 219, while Bazan carded a 70-75-74-219.

Jaguars� pitcher Broc Haymon showed he had game on the golf course as well as he finished third in the Championship B flight of the event, 11 shots back of winner Pablo Rivas and three shots out of second.Haymon, a junior from Bridge City, posted rounds of 80-78-77 to finish at 235.
