Professor Talks lecture series to spotlight faculty research, engage campus
Texas A&M University-Victoria is inviting students, faculty, staff and the public to Professor Talks, a lecture series planned intermittently from September through mid-November.
Professor Talks will highlight scholarship and research of professors across multiple disciplines from A&M-Victoria.
Many students are unaware of what their professors do outside the classroom, often perceiving only the differences in teaching loads compared to high school teachers, said Justin Bell, director of First-Year Seminar and professor of philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. First-Year Seminar students are encouraged to attend, Bell said.
A significant portion of a professor’s time is devoted to original scholarship and research, work that varies widely across academic disciplines and is not always visible or easily understood by students, Bell said.
“This lecture series looks to give First-Year Seminar students a better idea about what scholarship is and why it is important,” Bell said. “It’s benefiting to students because they get to learn about some very interesting projects, and they are often surprised and delighted to learn that they share interests with their professors.”
All Professor Talks lectures will take place at University West, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St., in the Alcorn Auditorium, Room 204.
Humberto Hernandez, assistant professor in the College of Natural & Applied Science, recently held his talk on Sept. 25. He spoke about scholarship in biology and shared his research on inflammation and aging.
Other presentations this semester will highlight:
- Oct. 8, 6 p.m., Olga Chapa, professor of management, College of Business.
- Oct. 23, 4 p.m., Moira Baldwin, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, College of Education & Health Professions.
- Nov. 6, 1 p.m., Andrew Baerg, professor of communication, College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.
- Nov. 18, 2:30 p.m., James Dupree, assistant professor of history, College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.
