A&M-Victoria announces scholarship to honor Gary Moses

Texas A&M University-Victoria is proud to announce the creation of the Brother Gary Moses Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of Brother Gary Moses, an alumnus of the university and a much-beloved community figure.
“Brother Gary Moses had a certain amount of sunshine that spilled over into everyone he met,” A&M-Victoria President Christian Hardigree said. “I had the honor of meeting him soon after I joined the university, and his love for education, the community and his fellow man left a lasting impact. Such a person deserves to be remembered with a gesture that will preserve his dedication to education and the community he loved. We are proud to be part of his story and to continue his legacy through this scholarship.”
The Brother Gary Moses Memorial Scholarship was created thanks to a donation from three-time A&M-Victoria alumna Robin Cadle, president and CEO of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. The university is soliciting donations in order to establish the scholarship as an endowment that will last for generations and continue Moses’s legacy of caring in the community.
“Brother Gary believed in the transformative power of education, faith and service to others,” Cadle said. “Establishing this memorial scholarship at Texas A&M University-Victoria honors not only his lifelong commitment to our community but also our shared connection to the institution we both proudly called our alma mater. As fellow Distinguished Alumni, we understood that education opens doors, but service changes lives. It is my hope that every student who benefits from this scholarship will be inspired to lead with the same humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others that defined Brother Gary's extraordinary life.”
The scholarship will be awarded to students who have demonstrated a history of or a current commitment to volunteerism and community engagement, as well as at least a 2.5 GPA and financial need. The requirement for involvement in the community will serve to encourage the continuation of Moses’s positive impact on the community through volunteering and engagement, said Amber Countis, A&M-Victoria vice president for advancement and external relations.
Moses was a well-known community figure and native of Victoria. He was born on July 29, 1949 and recently passed away on July 19. Moses taught history at Patti Welder Middle School for 37 years, and later in life was a constant, bright presence at events across the community – both large and small. He was well known for his habit of greeting everyone as if they were a personal friend. To honor Moses’s memory, the City of Victoria has renamed the Victoria Community Center as the Gary Moses Community Center and hosted a public memorial and celebration on July 29.
“Brother Gary is a beloved member of our community and our Jaguar family,” Countis said. “As an alumnus, he was always excited to hear about what was happening at the university and how he could help promote the students and the great things happening here. He was always my first call when we had a new event on the calendar. He was recognized in 2017 as a Distinguished Alumnus for his service and accomplishments. I have only been in this community for a few years, and he always made me feel welcomed wherever I saw him. I can only imagine and be inspired by someone who did that for countless others he taught, volunteered, and worked with over the years. I am so happy that we will have a way to pass on a little bit of Brother Gary’s legacy to Jaguar students for generations to come.”
