Registration open for math and robotics awareness event
Registration has officially opened for students in the Victoria and Crossroads area to attend Texas A&M University-Victoria’s Mathematics & Robotics Awareness Day which will be held on March 24.
A&M-Victoria’s Math & Robotics Awareness Day is a free event that brings high school students to campus to participate in mathematics and computer science competitions; observe presentations and demonstrations of science, technology, engineering and mathematics principles; interact with area industrial leaders in STEM fields and enjoy hands-on activities.
This will be the 29th year that A&M-Victoria has hosted the Math & Robotics Awareness Day. The event will be funded with part of a $50,000 grant provided by Alcoa Foundation. The grant not only funds the event but also marine biology field trips and a new event – Pathways to Understanding Life Sciences and Education (PULSE) – which will be held later this spring.
“Math & Robotics Awareness Day is a great opportunity for area high school students to come experience elements of STEM careers on a university campus,” said Dmitri Sobolev, interim dean of the College of Natural & Applied Science. “Every year, we are excited and proud to welcome these students to campus and show them how STEM careers can make an impact. I look forward to seeing them again this year.”
Math & Robotics Awareness Day is limited to 200 high school students. To register, teachers can go to https://www.uhv.edu/stem-events/math-robotics-events/ and click the registration link. Registration will be open from Jan. 26 to March 16 or until 200 students are registered.
As part of the event, students in each grade will take a mathematics test. In addition, those who wish to test their computer science knowledge can take a computer science test. The top three scores in each grade level of the mathematics tests and the top three in the computer science test will receive awards at the end of the day. In previous years, prizes for the first-place winners have included tablets such as iPads. The second- and third-place winners in each category will receive medals or trophies.
In addition to the test, students will attend demonstrations and presentations by A&M-Victoria faculty members. They also will be able to interact with representatives from area companies and industries through expo booths between demonstrations. A free lunch and snacks will be provided.
