Constitution

Section 1. Membership and Qualifications

  1. The judicial powers of the Student Government Association shall be vested in the Judicial Branch. The Judicial Branch shall be composed of the elected and appointed student representative(s)
  2. The Judicial Branch will consist of six (6) members: One (1) Chief Justice and five (5) Associate Justices.

  3. All Justices must have an elevated knowledge of parliamentary procedures, Robert’s Rules of Order, and the Constitution.
  4. All Justices must have completed at least one (1) full semester at the Texas A&M University - Victoria at the time of election or appointment, with the exception of freshman, transfer, or graduate students.
  5. No Associate Justice may hold their seat on the assembly concurrently with a position in the Executive Board.
  6. All Justices shall be members of the student body and shall be in good academic and disciplinary standing unless decided upon otherwise at the time of election by the or appointment Executive Board. Shall be in good disciplinary standing and must remain in
    such status while serving in their position, as enumerated in the bylaws. The Chief Justice shall hold a training with all Associate Justices to learn and review the policies and procedures outlined in the SGA Constitution.
  7. The Chief Justice is a non voting member of the Judicial Branch unless there is a tie and it must be broken then only can the Chief Justice vote.

Section 2. Authority, Powers, and Responsibilities of the Judicial Branch

  1. Associate Justices
    1. Associate Justices must abide by, uphold, and support the Student Government Association Constitution, and other governing documents; support the university community and its mission; represent their respective constituencies, and where applicable the student body to the university and local community; accept reports from the SGA Administration, internal committees, and members of the university community.
    2. The Judicial Branch shall interpret the Constitution and shall have the power to enforce the Constitution and bylaws of the Student Government Association in a case where an active member of the Student Government Association breaks the policies and procedures outlined in the SGA constitution.
    3. The Judicial Branch shall be responsible for the structure and examination of the Student Government Association and its governing documentation including the SGA constitution. 
    4. The Judicial Branch shall be responsible for the compilation of monthly reports detailing the endeavors, proceedings, and ordinances adopted by the Student Government Association including reports on current ongoing business.
    5. The Judicial Branch must participate in ten (10) volunteer hours a semester could be internal or external opportunities.
    6. If any Judicial Branch member fails to attend two (2) consecutive meetings (Attendance Excuses must be submitted within 24 hours before SGA Meetings or 48 hours after SGA Meeting, and a limit of 3 excused absences are allowed) or three (3) total meetings for the elected year, that Officer may be removed by a majority vote at the following executive board meeting. In the case of extenuating circumstances, a special vote may be held outside of a meeting.
