Counseling Services
The Counseling Center offers a range of services related to mental health counseling for students and educational events regarding health and wellness topics. If you are seeking support, our goal is to ensure you a safe place where you can express yourself and your thoughts without judgment. Services are free and confidential.
Individual Therapy
Meet with a counselor for regularly scheduled individual sessions, typically once every two weeks. This service involves one-on-one sessions with a counselor. Students can get individual help for a variety of concerns. These include adjusting to college, psychological challenges (i.e. depression, anxiety), processing through traumatic experiences, and many other types of support depending on the need of the individual.
Couples Therapy
Meet with a counselor and your partner. Only one member of the couple needs to be an eligible A&M-Victoria student. This service allows for the couple to work on the relationship instead of the individual mental health concerns. Couples counseling can also help friends or roommates resolve communication and relationship problems.
Group Therapy
Meet with other students and a counselor(s) to discuss problems and concerns.
Group therapy is sometimes the best approach for the following goals:
- Improving relationships.
- Overcoming fears related to social anxiety.
- Building strategies for managing stress.
- Reducing anxiety, worry, and nervousness.
- Managing problems with mood, such as depression.
- Processing through traumatic experiences.
- Developing anger management skills.
- Increasing knowledge of and the ability to manage difficult emotions.
Assessments
Limited and focused mental health, alcohol, and drug screenings are available. Please call or email ahead of time for an appointment.
Consultation
If you are worried about someone who is a current student, we are happy to discuss the matter with you. Faculty, staff, students and others are welcome to call the Counseling Center or visit in person to consult with a counselor about available resources and options.
Outreach
Outreach is focused on mental, physical and sexual health. Topics include healthy relationships, stress management, suicide prevention, anxiety, healthy eating, depression and more. For more information, visit our health educator in person or our programming calendar on JagSync.
Crisis Services
For help during a mental health emergency, visit our office and be seen immediately during regular business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. After hours, please contact the Gulf Bend Crisis Hotline at 877-723-3422 or by dialing 9-8-8. The Counseling Center does not have staff available outside of regular hours.
For life-threatening mental health emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. In the event of an emergency on campus after regular hours or during university holidays, please call Campus Security at (361) 570-4357.

Victim Advocacy
This service is available to students who have been involved with interpersonal violence, sexual assault, or stalking. A counselor can meet with the student to provide resources, support, and/or accompaniment (such as when attending a sexual assault exam or a court hearing). For full information on sexual misconduct-related issues, visit the A&M-Victoria Title IX and Equal Opportunity website.
